I love cupcakes and was super excited when I saw the Groupon for Gigi's. I even checked out the website and loved the history of the place. My hubby and I planned a special trip over to UNLV just to get them. On the way I saw that Groupon had a daily special, 6 for $4 and I grabbed it.
The shop is darling and the cupcakes look beautiful, with an almost equal ratio of frosting to cake. We picked out six, got to the car and decided to half one. OMG. I looked around for the video camera cause I was sure I was getting Punked! The frosting tasted like sugary wax, with a cardboard after taste. I even blew my nose thinking it must be my sense of taste and smell. I look over at my husband and he looks ready to barf. The cake was flavorless and dry as well. The cupcake that had a "cream cheese" frosting tasted nothing like any cream cheese I've had before. Not to mention the frosting had developed a crust, which only happens with old cupcakes (we were there at 10am!!). Sampling a few more, I realized they were all disgusting and tasted the same. I was so disappointed.
A few weeks later I used my other Groupon and gave them another shot. I even asked the lady behind the counter if these were freshly made cupcakes. Before the question was even completely out of my mouth she lipped off at me snidely and said "Yes, they are made here" in a very condescending way. Did I mention the first trip I made, the girl behind the counter had the personality of a wet mop and seemed pissed we were there? Both women both times were not what one expects working in a bakery.
Bottom line: Gigi's cupcakes are gross. Do yourself a favor and check out The Cupcakery. I've been going there years and have NEVER been disappointed. Even Smith's or Albertsons do a better job with cupcakes. But for those of you that like frosting that tastes like it's made with decade old Crisco and cake that wouldn't get a D- in home ec., then Gigi's is for you.
