| - Pros:
-Cheap. We paid $61 (incl. taxes and fees) to have a compact for two full days.
-Our rental (Chevy Aveo w/ 8,000 miles) got us from Vegas to Phoenix and back without any problems
-No problems reserving through Fox Rent-A-Car's website
-Once we got to the agent, we flew through the process and got to our car within 5 minutes.
-The agent didn't push us too hard to get add-ons. She asked if we wanted insurance and if we wanted to switch to a larger car. I steadfastly responded with, "NO" and it wasn't brought up again.
-I observed two of the three agents at the counter were pleasant to their customers.
Cons:
-We had to take a cab to the airport and two shuttles to get to the rental car company. Kind of annoying, but we're from Chicago and are used to crazy public transit commutes.
-The line was ridiculously long and other people seemed to take forever to get their reservation made with the agent. I believe we stood in line 35 minutes before we got to an agent for our 10AM pick-up time.
-The guy next to us got his car through Orbitz and the agent told him she couldn't see his reservation and needed him to pay (again). He even brought his paperwork with him verifying his reservation and payment. The guy went ahead and wrote a check then called Orbitz. He was with this agent from the time we arrived until we left so we don't know what came of the situation. Save yourself a major headache and ONLY reserve directly through Fox's website (you also won't have to prepay).
-We didn't get to choose which compact car we wanted. We ended up with a banana yellow Chevy Aveo with 8,000 miles on it. It had some alignment issues, but otherwise was okay. We could've done much worse.
-The car had stains EVERYWHERE in the interior and the exterior was covered in dings, scratches, and paint chips. We didn't want to risk getting blamed for anything, so we walked around with the guy checking the car and made sure everything was properly documented before we left. Upon returning the car, we had absolutely no problems and I was given a receipt showing my $89 deposit was refunded. Unfortunately, it's only been 1 business day since our return so I can't verify yet that I actually received the refund.
Suggestions:
-Reserve ONLY through Fox Rent-A-Car's website. Don't make the mistake of going through a third party site like Orbitz or you'll very likely end up getting charged twice.
-The guy in front of us bought the insurance. The cost for his insurance was $199! If you already have full-coverage personal car insurance, do NOT buy car insurance through a rental car company unless you plan on beating the car to $H!+ in a derby or something.
-Read all of the paperwork that comes with your reservation print-out if you reserved online before arriving to pick up your car (for those upset they didn't know they'd have to take a 2nd shuttle, this information is included in the paperwork). Also be sure to read the fine print on your contract (front and back... Don't be fooled, there is writing on the back that's in light gray). You'll discover you will get penalized for stuff like returning your car early as well as late. Besides, it's just good to know exactly what you're getting into and can verify that the agent didn't tack anything extra onto your bill (i.e. unnecessary insurance).
-Give yourself plenty of time to get there before you need to be back on the road. The shuttle from the main car rental area at the airport to Fox Rent-A-Car took 15 minutes to arrive. It'll probably take a minimum of 15 minutes to get through the line to your car and you definitely don't want to have to rush the car inspection before you leave if you have time constraints on getting to where you need to go with your rental car.
-Give the car a thorough inspection before you go to the inspector. Take pictures or video tape the entire car to prevent potential problems later. Make sure the inspector at the gate documents every little ding, scratch, and stain.
-If you hope for the best but prepare for the worst, you shouldn't have too many problems with Fox or too many other companies for that matter.
