| - Warning. Read before going to FastMed Urgent Care
Our 6-month old child started continuously vomiting on September 19, 2015. We went to FastMed as this is our first child and did not know any better. We had visited this location previously and it had met our standards and so we chose to visit this same location again. This FastMed location is also the closest healthcare facility.
Upon our arrival, the staff noticed the incessant vomiting from our child and proceeded to inform us they did not contain the equipment needed for this type of medical emergency. It is true that they brought us into an examination room, but no examination was done. They brought us back to clean up our child, not upset the other customers in the waiting room, and to print off directions to the closest hospitals.
While we were in the examination room, one staff member started to demean us for visiting FastMed first. "What are you doing here...? No, WHAT are you doing here instead of a hospital?" She implied we should have known this location could not assist us. We didn't realize how serious this situation was. We are new parents doing the best we can. We ran to the nearest familiar medical service provider which was this FastMed Urgent Care facility.
The staff gave us the directions to the hospitals and we were on our way to the Banner Children's Hospital. After checking in, going to the examination room at the hospital and a series of questions, tests and 2 attempts at an IV, we notice my wife had 2 missed calls from an unknown number. The hospital tries a 3rd attempt at the IV and fails again. This is when the same unknown number calls my phone and I answer. It is FastMed Urgent Care trying to collect a co-pay.
This location has the nerve to call us for a $100 co-pay for un-known services rendered. What service did this location provide? They belittled us, gave us a few paper towels and directions to the hospitals. Trying to charge my family and the insurance company is morally wrong and goes against everything I read about on FastMed Urgent Care's website. In FastMed Urgent Care's mission statement it says "Our exceptional and compassionate healthcare providers and staff commit to always be: Caring, Respecting, Accepting, Valuing, Encouraging, and Understanding." We are in the middle of holding my 6-month old daughter down so two nurses can poke and prod my daughter, and FastMed with the knowledge of what action the hospital will likely take, interrupt and call to collect a false claim. Not once, twice, three times...they called 5 times within a short time span.
What further cements the idea that this FastMed location could not provide proper care and knew this is because they suggested I go to a children's hospital. They said, "I cannot tell you to go to a children's hospital over another hospital, but if you go to a non-children's hospital they will probably need to transfer you to a children's hospital." This medical issue was so specific and needed precise dedicated equipment that this FastMed location implied a traditional hospital may not contain the necessary equipment to treat my daughter.
Unfortunately, nothing in our visit resembles FastMed's mission statement. We received horrible service, if one can even call it a service, were treated inappropriately and then sent a bill with a threat of collection activity if not paid within 30 days.
FastMed Urgent Care did not provide any medical service, knew that they could not provide medical service for our situation and yet they want to be paid.
IS THIS ETHICAL OR LEGAL?
You decide for yourself. You've been warned
