  • I love the center of the Las Vegas Strip, but when I visit Las Vegas I spend very little time there. For the most part I stay as far away as possible. The reason is simple: Las Vegas is the least permanent city in America. Grab some while you can, because it's going fast. This is especially true of the valley's many independent casinos. They're a vanishing species. Some are absorbed into chains. Boyd Gaming has absorbed quite a few. They took over the Cannery during my visit last year. I like Boyd Gaming a lot, but I like independent casinos more. Indies are never the same once they get taken over by a big corporation. Some are absorbed, other independents just up and die. Vacation Village, next to the airport, such a wonderful little dump, gone. For years it was my first stop when I flew in, and the last stop before I flew home. Nevada Palace, on Boulder Highway, had the saltiest old broads working the cage. I loved to stop there and pick up cool collectible casino chips for my collection, now it's just a sad empty parking lot. And the Opry House up in North Las Vegas, where no one with any sense would ever go, but where I always felt right at home, is gone now too. In more than fifty trips to Las Vegas, I've never been to the Bellagio. I'm sure it's beautiful. I figure it will be there when I finally get around to visit. Who knows how long there will be a Jerry's? Time to visit is now. I first started coming here in the early 90s. The big draw then was the Coffee Shop, which was famous for their Prime Rib dinners. The Coffee Shop has been remodeled since back then, but the food is still very good. I have played Bingo here a few times. It's an OK place to play Bingo. I like it better for penny slots. Penny slots are a lot of fun at Jerry's. Seems like everyone has a fondness for old school Vegas. Me included. I love checking out displays of vintage slot machines and neon signs from defunct casinos. We yearn for a taste of old Las Vegas. A little less corporate, a little more unpredictable, much more authentic. That's this place to me. For gambling and carrying on, I'd rather be here than just about any other property on the Strip. Mike C says: Get it before it's gone.
