| - This is such a fun race! I've completed it for the last 8 years so watched it evolve from day to night and watched the race crew struggle through water and weather issues over the years. Rock 'n Roll is an upstanding organization that puts on terrific events and they've been very responsive to feedback from the field.
The Vegas venue is truly unique. Yes, running at night is strange for almost all of us since we train in the morning, but it is well worth the nutrition challenges for this once-in-a-lifetime experience (every year feels like once-in-a-lifetime for me!). Las Vegas shuts down the Strip twice a year--the night of the Rock 'n Roll and New Year's Eve. This is truly a special event for our community and our volunteers come out in force to support the athletes. Running the Strip at night is like nothing else--the lights are magical and you are running in a wonderland of erupting volcanoes, dancing waters, live bands, hilarious signs, and too-many-to-count Elvis', tutus, and brides. The vibe is sheer fun (at least for the first 10 miles). When athletes begin to tire around mile 8, they turn onto Fremont Street and are reinvigorated by a party including a fire-spouting praying mantis, Asian drummers, people carrying foot-tall cocktails, and a Neon sign museum. It's surreal! Then, there's the 5K haul back to to Caesar's for the big finale where tourists cheer you through your final steps. The finisher's shoot is exceptionally long (perhaps 1/2 mile), but filled with revitalizing liquid and fuel. Unfortunately, there were no porta-potties in the shoot nor mylar blankets this year. It is VERY cold after the race so plan ahead for the long walk back to your car.
The 1/2 marathon course is absolutely flat. I've PR'd on the course, but don't recommend it for that purpose. With 40,000 friends at your side, you will need to weave through the crowd most of the time. Also, it takes awhile to get into your running groove because the waves are so large (it takes time for everyone to get through the starting line and spread out).
This is a great race for walkers and joggers and a great race to run with friends.
