I usually park here for my run thru the UNCC campus and back. On the wekeends get here early as this is a popular spot and parking will be tough espically if there is a soccer event (which seems like there is every weekend).
The trails are pretty good 99% paved unless you run further than approximately 2 miles then you hit gravel or run out of trail (University City Blvd). I have never had any issues here and as long as you're smart you shouldn't either. Also a note is that during the hot summer months most of the trail is 50% to 80% covered with trees (almost like walking thru a long tunnel) so there shade in most spots along the trails.
The park closes at 8:00 PM sharp and since the parking lot is about 20 feet below the street this area is pitch black at night. Don't even think of leaving your car here overnight..chances are it will have at least one window smashed and your car ran sacked!!! There are signs everywhere about hiding your valuables so do just that and you should be ok. Also they lock the gate at some point in the evening so again DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR here overnight!!!!
I think the park opens at 7 or 8 so if you are an early runner/walker you might have to park @ UNCC and access the trail from there.
Also don't forget about the boardwalk...that can be a fun little adventure if you are looking for a quiet walk with less traffic. It ends about half a mile in.
