This hotel seems to be the best of all worlds - central yet quiet, luxurious but not too expensive, amazing amenities and all accessible. Deserving of 5 stars for the type of hotel it is unless you think 5 stars means some crazy luxury hotel that only movie stars stay at.
Beginning with the location, you need to walk only 2 more blocks further past the sister Starwood property the Westin and it feels like a world of difference. The Westin is on a large downtown street with traffic while the Sheraton is surrounded by quiet streets yet still just across the street from the Eau Claire Centre (restaurants, mall and a movie theater) while overlooking the Bow River and the surrounding nature trails. If you request a room with a view, that's an above average view in the city to wake up to! Also walking distance to the downtown malls, Chinatown and C-Train are about 10 minutes maximum. I'd say a fair trade off if you ask me!
Amenities include a professional and well equipped fitness centre and a large pool that features a twirling tube-slide! I wasn't able to take advantage of it but I got to sneak a peek and it was AS ADVERTISED! The hotel itself has the faux Irish Club (Finn MacCool's) as other reviews have mentioned which is quite good for the atmosphere and weekend live music. The late dinner I had there was just ok though.
Now if you are willing to splurge a little bit, or if you're staying on Starwood Points or even better if your company is picking up the tab - I'd suggest upgrading to the Club Lounge floor. It's most definitely worth it if you've got a jam packed daytime schedule that may not leave you with any time to stay charged. The room size is the same as their larger rooms on other floors, but what you really pay for is access to the CLUB LOUNGE. It's a well sized lounge with a full bar and an outdoor patio. A hot breakfast buffet is served in the morning and the assortment is commendable. Then in the evenings beginning at 5pm - you can go for appetizers which was also a good enough selection that will definitely spoil your dinner if you're not careful. My schedule during my stay was such that I didn't have time to find breakfast elsewhere but the food was so good at the lounge why would I even want to leave the hotel. Then we had an evening event that we had to rush to from our earlier daytime activities, so we had just enough time to relax in the lounge and fill ourselves up until we could get a late dinner.
So all in all - our hectic schedule and short stay in Calgary was made infinitely better and easier (with a pregnant wife in tow) by the impeccable decision to stay at the Sheraton Suites with the Club Lounge upgrade. We'll definitely be coming back the next time we're in town.
