  • Didn't know much about La Gourmandine before my husband and I popped in here on a recent Sunday, just that it's got some impressive Yelp cred. I've heard and read that parking on Butler Street can be rough, but it was a piece of cake during our early afternoon visit, and I can't imagine it would be tremendously difficult any time of day if one is willing and able to walk a few blocks. I was surprised by how tiny this place is, bummed there weren't more options from which to choose. No worries though; my sweet tooth was satisfied. While in the shop I recall wishing that the label indicating the name of each item also contained an explanation of the item. I have no problem asking questions, but when there's a line behind you it's nice to have info more readily available. I don't remember the exact names of the couple pastries we scooped up, but for the sake of this review I'll refer to them as the "pistachio thing" and the "chocolate croissant." Would have liked for the chocolate croissant to contain a little more choc, but my thighs thank La Gourmandine for limiting the amount of rich choc nestled inside the buttery pastry. The pistachio thing was really good. Great texture and flavor. The chocolate chips added a little something extra special too. I'd order the pistachio thing again, and I'd also order the éclair because I think it's a similar dessert in terms of texture. And I typically don't even really like éclairs, so that says a lot. I love almond and noticed a bunch of reviews praising La Gourmandine's almond croissants. Might have to get one of those next time too! Did I mention La Gourmandine is tiny? There's some seating, but I wouldn't recommend enjoying your goodies inside unless you don't mind butts in close proximity of your face and food. There's a little community park with some benches right across the street, a nice coincidence.
