  • The Wisconsin State Capitol is an incredibly beautiful building designed by one of the United States' most famous architects: George B. Post. I was there is past July on a road trip with some family and since I work at the capitol in California I had to stop in. Coming from a capitol with such tight security I was surprised and pleased to see how easy it was to visit the capitol in Madison. There are no metal detectors at the entrances and, of course, no fee to get in. The dome and the four symmetrical wings that go out in each compass direction were really awe-inspiring. I also found it interesting that people are allowed to protest inside! When we arrived (during the lunch hour from 12 to 1) there were people chanting and singing in the rotunda. There is a nice museum part way up around the dome, and I especially loved that since the weather was nice we were able to walk around the outside of the dome. There are beautiful statues and views of both lakes that surround the isthmus on which Madison is situated. Our guided tour was really fun as well! It lasted about an hour and the tour guide, Jason, did a great job! We were able to go into the governor's office since he wasn't in! The conference room there is really beautiful, and it was a special treat to go there since the governor's office is always off limits at the California capitol. We also visited a committee hearing room, the Supreme Court Chamber, and the Senate Chamber. Since the Senate had already finished session, we were able to sit at their desks on the floor level-- another special treat! The last stop was to sit in the Assembly gallery and watch a little bit of the debate since the members were in session. The tour guide was informative and friendly. He was a new guide, but was extremely knowledgeable. He even gave us a nice lunch recommendation. Thanks, Jason! The building itself is incredibly beautiful and detailed. I loved all of the marble, the stained glass skylights, the murals in the meetings rooms, and the badgers spread around the building. Overall, visiting the capitol was a true delight!
