| - I booked my trip through Southwest Vacations and was very hesitant to select this hotel due to the negative reviews - but I honestly had a great time and very few complaints.
This is an older hotel, but has been remodeled. It is situated at the entrance to Fremont St, which has tons of free music and entertainment. Check in was smooth and painless; even though we arrived on a Saturday evening - it took less than 10 minutes. They were sold out of king rooms, but promised to have me in one by 10am the next day - and they delivered.
Las Vegas is a smoking town - no matter where you go, you are surrounded by smoke, and this casino is no different. However, I appreciated the pleasant smell in the hall way and in our nonsmoking room. (Other reviews referred to this as "carpet perfume" but I'm not sure how accurate that is.) I stayed in the South Tower. The room was very large, bed was comfortable, everything was clean. Bathroom is small, but nice - hot water was plentiful and water pressure was fantastic. (I did not experience any "sewer" smell as mentioned in the other reviews.) The air conditioner was kind of loud, but I didn't mind because it covered the noise coming from Fremont St. I couldn't hear any noise from the rooms next door or in the hallway, which was very nice.
The pool was small, but clean. I was extremely disappointed that it closed at 5pm. What pool in Vegas closes at 5pm?! Plus, the poolside bar was "closed for the season." :(
The casino has a nice variety of machines and tables, however it was nearly impossible to get waitress service. Sunday night the casino floor was very crowded and waitresses didn't even notice us - Monday night there appeared to only be TWO waitresses on the floor and one of them was a senior citizen. (I'm not exaggerating.) There is a pizza place, McDonalds, Subway, and a Hash House a Go Go - fantastic & huge portions of food.
There is TONS of stuff within walking distance of this hotel/casino. The Golden Nugget i right next door, along with several other historic old casinos. Fremont St was an experience in itself and my group had a great time wandering around, people watching and seeing the sights. Live music right outside the door of this hotel every night. The Mob Museum and Neon Museum are both a very short distance away, plus Container Park - the new shopping area built out of shipping containers!
Check out was very easy and my deposit was back on my credit card within 3 days. I was very pleased with the service at this hotel and would definitely go back again and/or recommend it to anyone traveling to Vegas.
If you are going to Vegas to be on the strip and on the "glitzy" side of things - this place is not for you. If you are going to Vegas to have fun, wander around, drink and do some gambling - you'll be just fine here. Lots of cheap buffets close by, too! My last trip I spent on the strip and while it was fun to see all the big, glamorous hotels/casinos it was hard to see everything because stuff is so spread out. Fremont St is a 4 block stretch of fun.. and I will probably NEVER go back to the strip.
All in all, a great time, a decent hotel, an okay casino and a REALLY good price!
