| - Executive Moving & Storage made the awful task of moving even worse. Please don't use them!
I really didn't have a choice of working with Executive--I contracted my move through Assurance Van Lines, who, despite the name, don't seem to have any physical vans. They bid out the job to Executive (makes sense, not sure any reasonable consumer would actually seek these guys out).
First off, the movers who picked up my things (DJ and Tony) were both heavy smokers, walking with lit cigarettes between my storage unit (indoors) and their moving truck (outdoors). They took two glances at my storage unit, and despite getting a quote of about $2000 from Assurance, DJ informed me that the move would cost me more than twice that--about $4500 in total. I can understand being off on a few items, but the fact that they wanted to more than double the cost of my move felt like extortion. When I protested they eagerly informed me that I would be on the hook for the $2000 whether I canceled the move or not, and that during the spring season, it would be 8 weeks before another moving company would be able to take my things to California.
Frustrated, I ended up dishing out the extra cash so I wouldn't be stuck living in an empty house for the next 8 weeks. In addition to moving my things, I also paid Executive to box up certain large or particularly fragile items--speakers, a bookshelf, my turntable, audio equipment, etc. Some of the items they packed for me were heavily damaged or didn't make it to California whatsoever.
Despite an initial time estimate of five to seven days it took Executive over 20 days to get my things to California. Not only that, but they weren't able to give me an estimate on when they would arrive until 24 hours prior to arrival--what the heck? I can track my $4.99 paperback novel purchase on Amazon down to the hour, but when moving all of my material possessions cross-country, Executive is unable to give me any sort of time estimate?
At first I thought--no big deal, I have two weeks until I'm starting up work--I have nothing but time to wait on Executive. However, because it took three weeks to deliver my items, I ended up having to ditch out on part of an important work conference on my second week of employment to meet the guys at Executive. Not only did their late date of arrive irk me, but they arrived at my house after 10PM! They apologized, saying they got held up at the state border... Nonetheless, when you ask your customer to meet them, pay cash on delivery of nearly $2000, and meet two shady, non-uniformed guys on a dark street at 10PM, it very quickly erodes trust in your business.
My final issue is this: The items they claimed were carefully packed all ended up with some kind of damage. Despite writing "FRAGILE" on the side, my turntable and the box that housed it (again, packed by Executive themselves!) looks like they set an anvil on it. My speakers were placed in wardrobe boxes, then those boxes were filled to the brim with random items they felt they could cram into the space. This carelessness caused a hole in my speaker grille, and damage to the speakers themselves. Outside of damaging my items I paid them to move, they also made several scratches and one hole in my drywall! When placing my bookshelf in my living room, the one guy (they all insisted on moving each item solo--even the heavy things were "strong-armed" by one guy) let it slip and dropped a corner through my drywall. Despite seeing the damage, he didn't say anything--no sorry, no anything. The kicker: many things simply didn't arrive in California. Executive shoves paperwork in your face the moment they unload everything, and ask that you note any missing or damaged items at that time. Recall it's now 11:30pm at this point, and I don't have the patience to unpack everything they've just brought into my home and check for damage and do an inventory. It's almost as if they're prepared to damage and lose your things....
To date, I've filed a Better Business Bureau complaint (they actually make you sign something asking you to refrain from making these types of complaints--hah!), filed an insurance claim for my lost/damaged items, and have called both Assurance and Executive asking for compensation for the damages. They have each claimed that the other is on the hook for insurance claims/lost itmes and I haven't received a dime for my lost and damaged goods. Don't work with Assurance or Executive!
