  • I have some very mixed feelings about the Matador Restaurant in downtown Phoenix. First, major kudos for being open on a Sunday (very rare in Phoenix) and even more kudos for being open after dark on a Sunday night. It was one of two restaurants on the way to our car as we ended a day at the Auto Show at about 6 PM. I didn't have a big appetite but my friend did, so we chose the Matador of the two places. Before I even walked in I thought a nice bowl of Albondigas soup sounded good. The place was empty except for one couple but the host greeted us warmly and showed us to a window table. Within a minute a server brought us some warm chips and two different salsas ... one chunky and one smooth. The chips were fresh and the salsas had a rich taste and just the right amount of kick. When my soup arrived it was in a huge bowl. At $8.95 it seemed priced right for the quantity of soup. It didn't look much like any albondigas soup I've had before. The broth was rather thin and tasted the same way. It had finely slivered onions and (I think) cabbage, with some tomato pieces, rice and numerous meat balls. Unfortunately everything tasted kind of bland. While I would have expected a warm tortilla as a side, instead I received a large plate of refritos. They tasted okay but seemed to be a strange compliment to the soup. My friend had a combo plate that was reasonably priced and reported to be tasty. On quality and authenticity of food, I would say the Matador is about average. The quality of service, especially considering the place was empty, it was a Sunday night, and I'm sure the staff would rather have been at home, was excellent. One of the owners spoke with us twice, she was obviously very concerned what we thought of her restaurant. She was a very pleasant lady. I would go back but not so much for a fine dining experience but to have a reasonably priced meal that's pretty decent. But as far as albondigas soup ... I think I'll make my own.
