  • Honestly, I don't even know where to start.... I called to schedule an appointment for the first time and asked for more information about the curly girl haircut. After being given a brief description of the haircut, I informed her that I didn't feel comfortable with a dry haircut at this time. She became discouraged (and I could tell from her tone, a little offended), but told me would could discuss it further when I came in. Well, I never made it to that first appointment, I chickened out. Months went by and I saw this woman with beautiful, but very short, curly hair. She told me she went to Curls Gone Wild, and more specifically this stylist I spoke with on the phone. Well, that was enough to convince me that maybe this place knows what they are doing with curly hair! I decided to give it a try. I called and made an appointment with the stylist. The salon is trendy and has cute waiting room furniture and wall décor. I sit and wait, and wait, and wait. There is no one there to greet me. Finally, 5 young adults walk-in and fill up the little waiting area. Someone comes out when they hear them. Apparently, they are visiting someone in the shop. It isn't until that point that someone greets me. So, I am given the "Curly Girl Handbook" to read. Then the stylist comes to get me. We again discuss the Curly Girl cut. She gives me plenty of example pictures to look at, but all of them look as if they have too much product in their hair, and most have very short hair. I didn't want my hair cut too short and I don't want it to look like I have a bottle of product in my hair either. I like to have defined, but soft curls. So, we decide maybe the curly girl haircut is not for me, but I will consider it for my next visit. I could tell the stylist was disappointed, but knew I would be more open minded next time. But, here is where it gets weird. I told her to style my hair however she would like, and we could discuss what I liked and didn't like about the style at the end. My hair looked asymmetrical, not necessarily the cut, but the curl formation. One side had well defined ringlet curls, and the other side was scrunched. Also, I have a cowlick, which I pointed out to her during the haircut, and she had tried to force the hair in an un-natural position, which only emphasized the cowlick, and not in an attractive way. Furthermore, there was a lot of product in my hair; to the point my hair color didn't even look normal. Her response was abhorrent. She told me that I "was like an anorexic." "It's always going to be one more thing...that one curl is out of place..." "Women with curly hair need to let their hair fall the way it should naturally and just accept it the way it is." Well, half of my hair is styled curly, and the other half is scrunched! I looked ridiculous! At this point, she was only belittling me, and making me quite uncomfortable. She also added, that if I didn't know how I wanted my hair styled, how could she know how I wanted my hair styled? What? I am at a salon that specifically cuts curly hair. They cut each individual curl based on how each curl falls for each person; the cut is customized for everyone. How do I know how to style my hair after they are done cutting each curl? On the way home, I called my husband and told him how dreadful I thought I looked. He assured me it couldn't be that bad. Well, I got home, and the look on his face said everything. All he could say is, "one side is definitely curlier." As the days passed, I just became angrier, and not about the haircut, but the way the stylist spoke to me. Yes, I didn't walk out with beautifully styled hair, but she has no right to speak to anyone like that, trapped in the styling chair. Normal stylists try to fix what you don't like about a haircut and make you happy with your style, not berate you and make you feel horrible. That is why I cannot recommend Curls Gone Wild, or give them a second chance.
