  • Man oh man. Looks like we are in the minority here on this one. We've been here now twice so I feel solid in my opinion of the current state of things at Masthead. Lemme break it down. First, I LOVE the concept of this place. This is what Cleveland needs more of - huge space, communal beer hall feel is awesome. Menu just right in both variety of offerings and price points. I also love the name and logo. So where did it go off the rails for us, you ask? Well, simply put, the beers we've had, and the food just didn't impress. First experience a couple of weeks ago, we tried the Radler and the Doppelbock as well as the brussels sprouts appetizer to share. The Radler was GROSS. A Radler should be light and refreshing (to be enjoyed, perhaps, while cycling as the style is intended). Not this one - so syrupy and not true to style. Doppelbock was better but nothing to write home about. The Brussels sprouts were ok but again, just meh. Kind of tasted boiled - no real flavor there. They would be much better roasted so they are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Second visit this past Saturday, we tried a couple of other beers - the Mango Wit was pretty good. I'd say the best of the ones we've had. This time we ordered the storied wood fired pizza. Now, we love us some thin crust wood fired pizza and we were excited to try the Masthead take as it has gotten great reviews. The crust and sauce here were spot on. However, on medium-sized 6-generous-slice pizza dubbed 'Nduja Sausage, there were exactly EIGHT pieces of sausage (see photo). I actually laughed when I saw it. If it had been a deluxe pizza that had a ton of other stuff on it, then the 8 would likely have been fine. Put c'mon man, it's a sausage pizza. There should be sausage on it. Overall, so far, this place doesn't wow at all. We will probably be back because the atmosphere is great and beers change frequently so I'll try others. I'm sure at some point I'll find one that is pretty good. But right now it's kind of a nope for us.
