| - My car started overheating and regurgitating coolant just as I parked it at Pittsburgh Airport, and this is the place AAA towed it when I returned a week later. I was hesitant because of the negative reviews, but by the time I saw those, it was too late to change my mind.
As a side note: I had replaced the radiator two or three weeks earlier, elsewhere, and also had a really bad experience with a mechanic. So this time I came in prepared, knowing what kinds of repairs and tests they were likely to recommend. The mechanic was actually kind enough to walk me over to my car and show me the test he was thinking of running (a hydrocarbon test). We talked for a bit, and he ended up recommending replacing the thermostat -- which was the same repair my normal mechanic suggested would fix the problem. He also mentioned a few other options, and was pretty clear about the risks of those.
It seems it was, in fact, the thermostat, and they were able to replace it for me for around $200 in a couple of hours. My one concern was that they charged me $40 (included in the 200) for coolant, which seemed not entirely necessary since they could have drained the existing coolant (which was new) and then put it back in. But this is a relatively small complaint, and may come from my own lack of knowledge about auto repairs.
Had I gone in without having done my research, might things have been different? I don't know. I think this place earned my five-star rating, though.
