| - A friend and I decided to grab some brunch at Coca Cafe on a Friday at 11pm. It had been over a year since my last visit, and I remembered from that experience that it had unique offerings and the kind of bustle that you want at your Saturday brunch spot.
On a Friday, you don't get the same "bustle" that you get on a Saturday. We were sat without a wait, and our waitress was quite quick to get us water and coffee. When she brought out the water, it was lukewarm. (Side note: the previous night I had just returned from a trip to China, where there is not a bottle of cold water in the entire country. Needless to say, I was used to water this temperature, but I missed ice cubes dearly. It could have been colder).
I ordered the green shakshuka and my friend ordered the eggplant Benedict. Last time I had been there, I also ordered the shakshuka, but the recipe had changed drastically. The food took a while to arrive at our table despite the emptiness of the restaurant. The shakshuka was the perfect portion size; however it was a tad overcooked. The egg yolks were quite hard, and the vegetables seemed to have a noticeable singed aftertaste and a thick, dry texture. Nonetheless, the sauce was herbaceous with an interesting, earthy flavor. I'd eat it again for sure while crossing my fingers and hoping its not overcooked. The potatoes on the side seemed slightly bland in my opinion, but I tend to enjoy things a bit spicier.
After we finished our meals, the waitress took a while to get us our check and, while the receipt reflected that I had spent more on my meal than my friend, she ended up charging our credit cards evenly.
Conclusion: food is unique and delicious despite being cooked inconsistently, and service is slow.
