  • Yokoso was always a big hit in my family... reasonably priced hibachi food, abundant seating, convenient location. So when a relative of mine was in town for the week and asked where we could get a group together to meet for dinner, I tossed Yokoso out there. I talked it up: the portion sizes, the flavors, the shrimp sauce. Now, mind you, at this point its probably been 2 years since I was last there, but how much could a restaurant really change in that time? Answer: a lot. Our party of 7 was seated at one of the back hibachi tables which was nice, they are a little more private than the tables in the middle of the restaurant and this made it easy to converse. I didn't catch the name of our chef but he was a nice young gentleman who we made easy conversation with upon discovering that all of us were originally from the immediate area (Munhall, Baldwin, West Mifflin). Our group ordered a variety of hibachi dinners, ranging from steak to salmon to chicken. I'm not sure about the rest of my group, as I was too afraid to ask after recommending this place so highly, but my meal was flavorless. Normally a healthy dip in shrimp sauce would salvage the various parts of my meal, but even THAT was flavorless. My steak was a bit overcooked (I asked for medium, it was bordering medium well/well done), the rice was bland, and the veggies, though cooked perfectly, were plain, sauteed veggies. In order to not tip off my dining companions I simply stated I was already full from picking at my meal as it was prepared (easy to do at a hibachi place, am I right?) and opted to take practically my entire meal home. Even my SO was disappointed upon heating the leftovers up later that night. Maybe our group's conversation sidetracked the chef and he forgot to season our food properly, or maybe the quality of this place has really gone downhill since I was last there. Whatever it was, I left still hungry and disappointed. I know this place is locally owned and not part of a giant hibachi conglomerate, but it's hard to eat local when there's such a lack of flavor. Three stars because its clean, has TONS of seating, and the waiter and chef were both extremely nice.
