| - My boyfriend and I made our annual trek for the final Frozen Fury games (preseason LA Kings hockey)
After reading some negative reviews about T-Mobile Arena, I was expecting to have a terrible experience.
Getting to the arena was easy. We went with an Uber to avoid the $20 parking fee. Our driver was able to drop us off inside the parking garage and we ended up right in the Toshiba Plaza, steps away from T-Mo. Do not expect to avoid parking fees by parking across the street and walking over. It's not that easy anymore. Our Airbnb host informed us that all MGM owned casinos had recently started charging for hourly parking. If you're booking a room in the vicinity, consider Monte Carlo or New York New York.
Our driver for the second game dropped us off behind the arena, which led me to discover that there is only one entrance/exit. Luckily, they open up all the doors so going through security was efficient. Signs posted outside informed us that large bags and backpacks would not be permitted inside. However, after the game, I noticed someone with a rucksack.
Upon entering, tickets are scanned and you are directed to the left or right. Straight ahead is a merchandise booth. Even if you are seated in the lower bowl, you have to go up the escalators to your seats. The arena is beautiful. Beer and concessions were plentiful, with short lines. Bathrooms were clean with an abundance of stalls. Merch booths contained both LA and Dallas/Colorado items. Overall, I was impressed. The only issues I noticed were not enough cupholders and the steep steps to the seats. Be sure to hold the handrails. If you are seated in the 200 seats, you will have to go all the way up to the last row and walk down to your seat. Reviews stated that the steps are really narrow and dangerously steep. You can avoid this issue by getting tickets for the last rows (I think row q is the last row)
We sat in Lower 18 for game one and Lower 2 for game two. The crowd was a good mix of LA die hards, visiting teams' fans, and Vegas locals coming to check out some NHL hockey. The ushers didn't do a very good job holding up the crowd from coming down while the puck was in play. This is an issue exclusively for sporting events, since people stand during concerts; it's also something that can be easily corrected.
Frozen Fury used to be held at MGM Grand Garden Arena, an arena built for boxing matches. Watching a game there felt like you were going to an AHL game. It was intimate and underdeveloped, difficult to exit, had crappy sightlines with obstructed views, and only a couple of merch tables. Still, it had its charm. T-Mobile has none of these issues. Views and sound were top-notch and seats were spacious, but what it lacked was the gauntlet. That long, anxiety-inducing walkway of raucous Kings fans chanting "Go Kings Go" or the relentless booing and jeering that Colorado fans had to endure for daring to cross our home away from home territory.
Farewell Frozen Fury, you will be missed. GKG!
