| - Quick review: spotty service, okay food, nice ambiance
We visited Spoon in early January with a reservation for 5. We arrived a little early and waited for a few minutes, however the table was ready by the time we had reserved it, so we were pleased (and pleased to have been sat in the back corner, far from the door in a cozy booth).
Service:
We sat for a while wondering who was actually our server, and after a male took a drink order from 1 out of 5 of us and left, we assumed it was him. It was not - a mousy female came over whose voice we could barely hear over the average noise level in the restaurant. Our initial impression of her - detached, distracted, and perhaps embarrassed, proved to be true for the rest of the evening.
I'm not one to constantly complain about service, but when your plates reach upwards of $30+, I expect a server who can at least properly take an order from the table. The wrong appetizer appeared, then the right one appeared several minutes later. We found ourselves waiting too long for things other than food - water, the check, an answer to a simple question. Believe the other reviewers that service will at best be spotty.
Food:
Among the 5 of us, we had a few hamburgers, the roasted pork, and the mushroom soup, while I ordered the scallops. Specifically: seared day boat scallops (5), smoked brisket + cabbage (like tiny sweet golabki), duck fat mashed potatoes, parsnip purée (the two were seemingly mashed together with little detection of the delicious umami of duck fat), sour apple sauce, and pine nut aioli. $27
I know what you're thinking: goodness, that sounds like a lot! Well, it was - palate wise, but was in fact a relatively small serving of food, especially compared to the portions on other plates. All in all, the mish-mash of flavors was not cohesive at all and the dish needed to be edited.
I had a taste of the burger and it was good. The fries were good as well, especially the aioli that accompanied them. Come to think of it, though - either my plate was missing the "pine nut aioli" or it was incredibly un-memorable.
Ambiance:
The interior was well decorated and had a very trendy and typical feel for a place like this. It gave the impression that the restaurant is new and current. It was cozy without being too comfortable, airy without being too sterile. Good, warm lighting.
I think with a different server and a different dish, it could have been a 5 star evening! Alas, with the multitudes of restaurants in the area I don't think I'll return during another jaunt to Pittsburgh, but I certainly could have done much worse. A-OK.
