  • Maybe I'm grade inflating here. After a five-day experiment with veganism, which is probably not advisable on a two-day Amtrak ride or for the ensuing visit to a state that names its beers after cows, maybe I was just really hangry and sick of tofu and fried mushrooms. But the Old Fashioned treated us right, and after a lot of mediocre pub and food truck fare in Madison, this place seemed about as good as it gets. Situated right on Capitol Square and ideal for general people/tourist watching, OF has a small sidewalk seating area in front and a bar and dining are inside. It's, well, old and woody looking, but in a classy way and not a divey way, and it's a good atmosphere to eat in, sans trendy music and with the sole TV over the bar turned down. The giant front windows allow for fun staring at the square and its goings-on. Because everything is about goddamned free in the Midwest, something I forget when I've been away for a while, I bought a giant, table-share appetizer plate (pickled beets, sliced pickles, pickled green beans, two cheese spreads, deviled eggs, potato salad and crackers); three pints of local craft brew (two West-Coast-style and an English-ish IPA--all very good) and a whole freakin' rainbow trout with sides for $50. I sometimes recycle my oh-so-pithy aphorism that "I've paid much less for much more," but this one's the inverse: I've paid a lot more for food, drink, and service not this good. So, the menu scorecard says that the legendary fried cheese curds dipped in cheese are damned cheesy, in the best way. Mac-n'-cheese (in case you missed the "we're in Wisconsin" bit) with asparagus: shizzle, man, I don't even like macaroni and cheese, and this was magical. And my whole trout was the whole haul for my hole. Sometimes, some thyme and some spinach and some more beets really hit the spot, and, awwww yeah: it was awwn. (Okay, I will stop doing this review in 1997 faux-urban slang. I'm old and have been drinking and sometimes I can't help it.) Our server (Steve, I think?) was cool and gave good beer advice. The staff collaborate and run each other's food and bus and refill water, the way that brothas and sistas oughtta. Okay, I promised to stop that. Anyway, this is a low five, but still a five. If you're in Madison, or live in Madison, for that matter, you should come here.
