The Farmers Market location for Simple Simon pies is awesome. You can't possibly pass by the booth without sampling a few pies. And then you buy. Because you liked them all.
I recently stumbled across the frozen versions at my nearby Co-Op store. I snatched up almost a half dozen of the Chicken Shepherds pies because these individual sized pies make fantastic grab-and-go lunch if paired with some veggies. They were about $3.50 which is pretty good.
Upon arriving home and showing them to my boyfriend, we both remarked at how much protein these little babies had. Not bad at all, we thought. Right before stuffing them into the freezer though, something caught my eye on the ingredients list: 'hydrogenated soybean oil'. On the top, AND in the filling of the pie. And 'vegetable oil shortening', which is essentially the same as hydrogenated vegetable oil.
I was disappointed. I try as much as I can to stay away from stuff that has hydrogenated oils in them, and make it a point not to bring home food that has them. Hydrogenated oils are extremely unhealthy, because they literally do not ever leave your system. I have bought many of the pies from the farmers markets before, but alas did not know the ingredients. Now that I know, I won't be buying them again. I will probably finish these pies because I bought them, but that would be the last of it. Too bad these little pies, seemingly small and harmless looking, are not as healthy as I had thought!
