| - I've had this place bookmarked forever! As soon as we got off the plane today, I drove here to finally check out all the hype.
My main interest was in the saba and the uni. A sign greeted me at the door that said that they were out of uni. Poo. Anyways, my impression of the menu was that Goyemon relied heavily on the deep fryer, cream cheese, and yum yum sauce (along with the amusingly named "orgasm sauce"). I'm a nigiri/sashimi type of girl myself, but I can still appreciate this stuff. Still, this was a bit much. On the plus side, they were really nice about making subs. Like I wanted the Alaskan, but with real crab. Done! And the servers were so fast with the order, which was important when you only have 45 min to indulge (though I doubt they time it).
Good sushi has to have good rice. Here, the grains don't melt together. It's like the individual grain is a little too al dente. The rice improved later in the evening, but still wasn't great. Also the knife work wasn't on point. I'm not talking about against the grain of the flesh or whatever...like the sushi was cut all crooked at times. And someone at the bar was overzealous with the lemon. My hotate and escolar nigiris had quite a pucker factor.
As far as my favorites...def the saba. I always order saba b/c aside from not having to worry about food dye, mercury, or pcb, it's mad good. It's got a very strong flavor though, so if you do eat tuna, salmon, etc, you might want to save the saba til the end of the meal. The grilled squid was great, too. It comes in thick cuts like fat fries. They also offer it in tempura form. O, and if you're feeling like there's too much rice (they really don't overuse rice here), save the rice from your sushi and order the dynamite. Yummy!
Overall, this is def a fun restaurant to visit and for $20 of unlimited sushi, you can't go wrong.
