I started attending classes at TYS mostly because it's close to where I live. Little did I know I was going to be part of one of the best yoga communities in the city.
The space is amazing. The old school elevator is hardly active when I go to class. There's a conductor but he only works during the week and is done at 5pm. When I'm lying down for savasana I imagine the dances that might have been held in the hall; kids jiving, girls giggling about that boy that just winked in their general direction. And maybe before that it was the office suite of some highfalutin gangster type; sitting behind his mahogany desk, rolling a cigar between his fingers while contemplating the fate of some underling that had failed him. Then I reconnect with my breath and chant ommmmmm.
My favourite class is the 1:30 hatha class on Sunday with Shehla Khan. She seems to radiate yoga. You leave her class feeling balanced in every sense. I especially like that she begins and ends her classes with restorative poses.
Prices are decent too.
