| - All right, where do I even start with these guys? So I was having a problem with my 92 SAAB not starting as it had been sitting for a few months, and in addition there was a problem with the clutch - when I pushed it in, there was no resistance and the pedal dropped straight to the floor. SAABs are kind of quirky, so I wasn't too keen on taking it to any old mechanic to have it fixed. Since these guys are supposed specialists in repairing SAAB and Volvo, I foolishly trusted them after reading a few positive reviews online. I needed the car fixed before the beginning of November, so I had it towed to Drive for Life on September 4 thinking that it would be plenty of time- WRONG.
They told me it would take until the following week before they even got a chance to look at it since they were booked up. Okay, cool, like I said, I dropped it off with plenty of time in advance so I was not worried about it. Fast forward two weeks. I call them on the 14 of September since I hadn't heard anything from them yet, and a guy (who I had not met yet, let's call him "guy A") tells me that the SAAB mechanic had to take an emergency vacation and would be back the following week to look at my car. I was only slightly annoyed by this, because again, I had what I thought was plenty of time.
I call them back ten days later and guy A tells me the same thing about the SAAB mechanic being on vacation and that he would be back "tomorrow" (his exact words). Another week passes and I still haven't heard anything from them. I call them again on September 29 and guy A tells me that the SAAB dude is still supposedly on his emergency vacation, but that he'll be back "tomorrow." Now I'm very annoyed and very skeptical about the whole situation. At this point I start calling Drive for Life every other day. (By the way, these guys NEVER answer their phone. Each time I made contact with them it was after calling them at least twice, and I left several unanswered messages on their machine) Eventually I reach guy A again and he tells me that my car needs a new starter and a new clutch, which wasn't like a huge revelation or anything and shouldn't have taken a month and a half to figure out.
Guy A tells me that the starter and the clutch will cost "around 1300 dollars" (again, his exact words). I tell him okay, start working on it, because at this point I am desperate to have my vehicle back and was willing to pay basically whatever they asked to have it back. He tells me that they can't start working on it because he doesn't know exactly what needs to be done with it and that they need to give me a price breakdown and that I can call them "tomorrow" to get it. By this time I'm sick of hearing the word "tomorrow," but I call the following day and leave a message. I don't get a call back until three days later, where guy A gives me the same exact information about the car needing a clutch and starter and that I should call back for a price breakdown. This time I tell him that they just need to start working on the car because I need it back already and again he tells me that he can't because he doesn't know exactly what's wrong with it!
So, I called them back one final time on the 29th of October, almost two full months after I dropped my car off. This time guy A acts super-surprised when I tell him that I still have not received a price breakdown on the repairs that my car needs, saying that he thought the SAAB guy had already given me a breakdown. He tells me to call back tomorrow.
It is currently the eighth of December. I took my 1300 dollars and bought a beater car in November to get me through the winter until I can afford another car. Throughout this whole saga, I only received one call from Drive for Life (in mid-October, after I had started calling them and leaving messages every other day) wherein they gave me absolutely no useful information about my car. Every time I've managed to reach them, it's been Guy A who answers the phone and every time he was a complete jerk, acting like I was bothering him and he was doing me the world's hugest favor by not fixing my car. I never got a chance to speak with the mystery SAAB mechanic, if Drive for Life even has one. Maybe he is still "on vacation."
I've been so ridiculously busy due to first not having transportation and then having to acquire a new mode of transportation that next week will be the first chance I get to have my car towed from their shop. I actually have no idea if it is still even there because Drive for Life has not bothered to call me. To be frank, I haven't called them to ask because Guy A is such a patronizing jerk that I don't want to deal with his incredulity and insistence on calling me "bud" every other sentence. (If you're reading this, I ain't your bud, pal.) I'm just crossing my fingers that they haven't had my car impounded so that I can get some money selling it for scrap.
If you are reading this, don't ever take your car to Drive for Life.
