  • Hmmmmm, this was the most interesting experience of the last month! It was like nothing I have ever seen before and was a bit surprising. So, this franchised acupuncture center was suggested to me by one of the physicians that I am seeing. I had been seeing another acupuncturist who was an Asian lady and I thought she was well trained and very good. She was licensed in multiple states and had just done an internship in China. There were a few issues: her business was at least a half hour away from my home and she charged $70. per session. Plus, I wasn't sure I was getting any long term benefit. So, when I was referred to Modern Acupuncture, I decided to give it a whirl. It's only five minutes from my front door and less costly. Interestingly, it is like a spa, kind of like where you would go for a pedicure. They have rows of comfortable recliners that warm your back and vibrate as the acupuncturist inserts the needles. The rows of chairs are partitioned off by curtains, almost like in an emergency room setting. But, this setting is relaxing and energizing, like any other spa. Soft music plays as large screened TVs hover above the recliners, projecting majestic videos of landscapes from around the world. Combined with the music and soft candlelight (electronic candles), it would be hard not to relax here. The only thing is that you are aware of all the other clients sitting in their partitioned spaces. It is semi-private the way that it's done. Within one minute of getting the needles inserted into different parts of my body, the needle in my ear popped out. The American acupuncurist was busy with another client and I could not get her attention without shouting her name, which I was not going to do in this super quiet space. It would have been akin to shouting someone's name in a library. So, I waited until she turned in my direction and grimaced in a way that suggested I needed help. She came over and saw what had happened with the needle popping out and said, "well that happens sometimes." She never inserted another needle and because I was only a few minutes into the therapy, I was thinking that if that needle was supposed to be healing some other part of my body, I was screwed. Ironically, a few minutes later, a needle in my forehead popped out. Same thing. It was not re-inserted. I have been going to acupuncture for quite awhile and have never had needles pop out. Ugh, I'm pretty sure that the needles need to stay in for a prescribed amount of time to have the desired outcome. All of the needles, not just a few. I like the package deals that they offer. I signed up for a month to month deal ($69. per month for two sessions) and will definitely give it a few more chances. My goal is to feel better and better, but I need needles that stay inserted the entire time. (I wonder if needles popping out could be proof that I am think skinned?) I do like the concept and the atmosphere of this franchise. Oh, and the selection of organic hot teas after the session is a nice touch. All in all, a good experience, but I need a few more times to form a final opinion. Stay tuned.
