| - Needless to say, this museum does not need another stellar review. It's got the animals and the show stopping dinosaurs, which are absolutely terrific. But the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems, and Wertz Gallery... WOWWW. I've never experienced anything like it. It is a large and extensive collection. Impressive, is a gross understatement in the way these artifacts have been procured and preserved, and are displayed.
I walked in thinking I'll see some rocks and walk out. It became one awe stoking moment after the next. It's dark and subdued, you're made to feel like you're underground where these "rocks" were discovered. There's probably hundreds if not a thousand plus in total, of unique and exotic looking specimens, from all corners of our incredible earth. I was shocked to see many were from our own country. The colors were amazing.
I highly recommend a visit to this exhibit, luckily it's one of their permanent ones. The dinosaurs and animals, go without saying. They're fun! and will bring you back to your childhood. The Carnegie system of museums is truly a great institution not just for Pittsburgh, but for the entire U.S. I can't wait to visit the other ones, and will definitely be returning here to see what I missed. The two museums for one deal is terrific, and even better with half off admission after 3pm.
A must when in Pittsburgh!
