| - We came to L'Express on the recommendation of our hotel concierge. We booked a trip a little bit too last minute to get a reservation at Joe Beef or Garde Manger (actually, the latter was closed the one night we had in Montréal anyhow).
We were not disappointed.
As I understand it, L'Express hasn't changed much over the many years it's been around. And it shouldn't. It has the feel of a classic Parisian bistro, a little tightly packed, a little noisy, but with an awe-inspiring wine list and a great menu of classics. I went for house-made Toulouse sausages, served with mashed potatoes and an incredible gravy, while Herself had steak frites.
Server made an unpretentious but excellent wine recommendation that fit both meals perfectly, and then for the most part left us alone, which frankly, is how it should be.
We wound up too full to consider dessert in the end, likely from the folly of a snack to tide us over until our 8pm reservation.
Don't neglect the pickles they bring to the table, they are amazing.
