| - First, let me say that I love, love, love this place. The amazing products they carry, the meets, cheeses, the prepared food, the BAKERY... They even have amazing fresh flowers (peonies, anyone???). The prices are even pretty good, not over the top like I expected. I definitely will be buying lots and lots of things here.
The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star ranking is the wine bar experience. Granted, I probably had over the top expectations for it, but it really fell short. The selection of wines available by the glass is broad and somewhat creative, but pretty heavy on what I call "third world wines," those not domestic or European. A few are nice but on this list, it was well over half. And I'm pretty sure there was not one Arizona wine on the list, although they sell a few in the store. Also, they REALLY need flights or tasting pours to complete this experience.
The glassware is pretty horrible, literally about one notch above banquet glassware. Heavy, thick, generally icky and dull-looking. (but clean, don't get me wrong). The wine menus are tri-folded black print on white copy paper. Major ick. Even the bar itself, although lovely, is just vanilla 90s granite. The rest of the store is amazing with depth and thought and this little wine corner is just... dull. It's two redeeming qualities are the view and the lemon/cucumber infused water. Both are really nice.
I hope Oakville will evolve the wine bar into something that is as awesome as the rest of the store. Hopefully a little feedback from the customers will help move that along!
