| - Yelpers, you let me down on this one. I feel like veterinarians are the new car salesmen of this generation...all they care about are finding ways to charge you more money. Unfortunately, East Maryland seems to be no exception.
I'd been looking for a new vet for quite a while and found this place on Yelp. The plethora of good reviews made me hopeful, but I got pretty much the same experience I've had elsewhere in Phoenix. The staff were friendly enough, they gave me an appointment for the exact day I wanted, and the office was clean and conveniently located. But, like most vets these days, I left feeling like they were trying to scam me. All I needed was a yearly check-up for my dog. She doesn't have any health issues and has always been on her appropriate monthly meds, so I expect to have a minimal bill and walk away without any concerns.
The first issue the vet (Dr. Martens) brought up right away was that my pup desperately needed a teeth cleaning. This may be true since I have never splurged and spent the $500 plus they want you to pay for such a thing. It just seems so extreme to have my dog put under anesthesia and then stuck at in an office all day long for a short teeth cleaning. And on top of the regular fee that they charge, the vet informed me that sometimes they have to pull teeth out while they're cleaning and there's no way of knowing in advance if or how many teeth would need to be pulled. Each tooth pulled is an extra charge...something like $50 or $75! So what you're telling me is that the $500 teeth cleaning could actually amount to WAY more??? Ummm...no thanks. I love my dog very much, she is the love of my life, but that just seems shady. Give me a price and stick to it. I also thought it was rather interesting that they offered me a booklet to read about the importance of teeth cleanings for dogs. The author? The very veterinarian who was suggesting the procedure! Hmmm....
Another thing I found annoying during my visit was related to one of the vaccines my dog typically receives...I believe it was the bordetella, but I'm not completely sure. I typically bring my dog in to the vet once a year and she gets whatever shots and vaccines necessary at the time. Well, this vet informs me that the bordetella is a 6 month vaccine. So, basically what you're telling me is that now I have to bring my dog in for another appointment in 6 months? So you can charge me another examination fee? Super weird and super shady. I even asked why she was receiving the 6 month shot instead of a full year and the vet acted like that's always what is given out. Does anyone else bring their dog to a vet twice a year? I don't even go to the doctor that much myself. Not cool.
Aletheia W...I must agree that I also don't appreciate my dog being taken out of the exam room for different shots/check ups. Our dogs are like our children and it's nice to get to see exactly what is going on at a doctor's office. Can't you do whatever needs to be done in there? Isn't that what the exam room is for?
My final point of interest is in regard to the Yelp "deal" that I see listed here. Just an FYI...the Yelp "deal" is the same "deal" they give you no matter what. If you're a new client, you get $25 off. After your appointment, they send you a card for another $25 off. It seems generous at first, until you realize that you're not really getting a deal at all. That's what they charge no matter what. Don't try to pretend we're getting something special if that's what is offered in all instances. Maybe you should just make your prices lower to begin with...
So, do I plan on sticking with this vet? Nope. I shall continue my search for someone who actually cares about their furry patients. Someone who isn't just going to try to squeeze every last drop out of my empty wallet. BLAH.
