| - This is my 19th brewery to visit in and around the Charlotte area. I'd been planning to come by earlier but they have odd hours and I hate traffic in that area. Regardless, I am so glad to have found it on a Friday night. They were only open from 4 to 8 PM, so this was kind of an end of the workday pre-party stop for me and my wife.
We showed up about 6PM. It wasn't crowded, so we were able to sit at the bar. First and foremeost, I love the setup they have. Their restrooms, which are very nice, are at the entrance. Love that. Get to have a pitstop on the way out. They also have little secluded/cubby hole sitting areas lining the wall so a group can hang out without being disturbed by others. It was a nice touch.
The bar area was great. There was decent seating and several tables and chairs in that area as well. A band was setup when we were there and the music was nice and not over bearing. As far as their display menu, I have only seen one better display in Charlotte. They have all the details about the brews on the menu, including ABV, IBUs, costs of flights, growlers, refills, etc. Well done. I like to know every detail upfront and Three Spirits does it perfecty.
That being said, while they expertly list their selections, I think their current 5 or so brews that are on tap are a bit weak in the ABV arena. Their highest ABV was a hop (Ain't No Hop Steppin') and was just 6.5%. Gotta have at least one beer that hovers around 10% for those who don't like to consume massive quantities. I did partake in two of the hops and because the IBUs were just right, it hit the spot without leaving that horrible aftertaste that most brewers can't figure out when working with Hops. The owner/brewer/surgeon got that one just right. I also had a shot of their very popular Red Moon Rising. That beer was very tasty and reminded me of Shiner Bock. But, like Shiner it is 4.5% ABV. Great chaser beer or Saturday afternoon game day beer, but a little weak for those who have limited time or don't care to drink all day.
I love the service and cleanliness of this place. They have 100% on their sanitation rating. Their bathroom was so clean, I felt bad having to go. And their bartenders were always cleaning. No spot, drip, or glass ring was to small. They must have a Always Be Cleaning motto. I like that.
Another fun thing they do here is offer fun little entertaining games for patrons to play. They gave me Pass the Pig. It's a fun dice game that is addictive. The batenders all have their favorite games so there are lots of choices. What was neat about the games was it makes you put down your phone and interact with friends and folks around you. You forget how much time you spend on the phone until you're playing a fun game with your friends. It is also a great way for the staff to interact with visitors. Liked that a lot.
One thing I did ask about when I got there was how they decided on their name: Three Spirits Brewery. Apparently, the owner is a big fan of Charles Dickens, hence the Three Spirits name which hails from A Christmas Carol. Love the name, although at first glance I thought the place was a distillery and not a brewery.
All in all, I really like this place. I think they have one of the best setups out there. They have great entertainment, fun games, a great atmosphere, cool shirts and growlers, an awesome staff, and decent beer.
What would make me give this place 5 stars you ask? My suggestion is to make the hours a little more consistent, and get at least one higher ABV. I'd even be fine with a 7.5 or 8. The amenities and staff make this place great, despite an unremarkable beer selection. Need to step up the beer a bit more to be in the game with the big boys. A few more TVs would be nice too. Aside from that...
Mucho Kudos. I'll be back.
