| - 4.5 "O" la las.
"O" my goodness, this show is simply "O"mazing. I've seen half a dozen Cirque du Soleil shows in my day, but this one stands out as one of the best yet (last time I was in Vegas I saw "Mystère" and fell asleep -- snooze fest).
What is most incredible about "O" is the staging and set. How Bellagio turns a solid floor into a shallow wading pool and then into a diving pool is beyond me, but I'm sure glad someone else has the technological savvy to do it. We were about 10 rows back from the stage, and we could see absolutely everything with perfect clarity, from the expressions on the performers' faces to what was going on in the pool itself.
The acrobatics and stunts in "O" are entrancing and simply astonishing. There were many moments when I joined the audience in collective gasps as a performer hurtled off a skeletal pirate ship suspended 50 feet above the stage, spinning and flipping and spiraling into the pool below, or a group of contortionists formed a human ladder climbing upwards from a bobbing raft floating in the water. Unbelievable feats, pushing the human body and laws of gravity and nature to their absolute limits. Comic relief is provided by two sad little sailor clowns. Hate clowns? Me, too. These guys tickled my funny bone, tho, and had the entire audience in stitches at points. It's the first Cirque show I've been to where I can remember actually laughing out loud. Emphatically. Many times.
My one and only complaint about the show is that the transition times between acts sometimes seemed interminable as they changed backdrops and sets and got the pool ready for the next performers. I understand why it has to be this way, but my numb bum was complaining to my brain by the end.
G"O" when you're in Vegas. N"O" matter what else you do, "O" will stand out as one of the highlights of your trip.
