| - So I'm driving up 19th Avenue to meet a client at his business. From my car I look with amusement at the tons of tiny mom-and-pop establishments on this street that I've never heard of and would never really have a reason to visit, given the area. Then, out of nowhere, two words on a sign on a completely non-descript little shack scream out at me from all the clutter:
CREOLE BARBEQUE.
Ever since the owner of the legendary Chez Bubba passed away a few years ago (his place is now Matt's Big Breakfast), central Phoenix... hell, the State of Arizona... has been starved for good ol' fashioned home style Creole cooking. As soon as I was done with the client, I rushed back here to give it a try.
What an oasis of charm this place is. The first thing that captivated me is its tie to Phoenix history. Burleigh Rideau, Sr. ("Papu") moved to Phoenix from Rideau, Louisiana in 1923. From 1949 to the late '60s he ran "Town Talk Barbeque" on 12th Street and Washington. Pictures on the walls show "Papu" in front of his old restaurant, in addition to others from the owners' Louisiana ancestors, and other scenery from Rideau today. Papu's descendants, two of whom I met and had an entertaining chat with while eating, decided to open up Town Talk "II" just 6 months ago, in homage to the original Town Talk.
In addition to the charm and the entertaining photography on the walls, the entire establishment was spotless. Spotless to the point that it warrants an entire paragraph. I walked into their bathroom to wash my hands and even the bathroom was impressive, and elegantly decorated. Five stars for the cleanliness alone, much less the food, friendliness, and character.
The food is everything I wanted it to be. I'm not from Louisiana so I don't claim to have Creole food judging expertise. I just know what tastes good and hits the spot. And their hot links sandwich does. So did their Cajun style fries. There were a dozen other things on their menu I wanted to try too.
This place needs to be known. All my friends who work downtown are about to get a spam-like email from me telling them to put this on their lunch list. You should too.
