  • In November 2017 I had a referral for my annual preventative screening mammogram with additional views and ultrasound and I went to Honor Health Breast Center where I have been going for the last 10 years or so. They did not take me in for almost 30 minutes after my appointment, but they completed the mammogram and I went home. Sometime later I received a letter in the mail (not a phone call), notifying me that because I have dense breast tissue, their screening was not conclusive and recommended additional screening. I have had dense breast tissue for many years, and have needed additional views previously, so was not concerned, nor had I needed to pay any additional charges previously. I went in for what I thought were the additional views that my provider had asked for with my screening mammogram referral, and as expected everything was fine. Then a few weeks later I started receiving bills, one from Honor Health and one from their radiology doctor's group. The total was over $300 and my insurance does not charge me for preventative care. I am eligible for a free preventative screening mammogram every year. So I knew that this couldn't be correct. After over 20 phone calls to Honor Health and my health insurance and my provider's office I have finally figured out what should happen for women who have dense breast tissue - they need to either have a 2D mammogram and have additional views or ultrasound (at the single visit) or if a radiologist is not available to read and decide what additional views will be needed, then a 3D mammogram should be done instead (which my insurance covers at no cost when done as a preventative screening). Instead, Honor Health did a 2D mammogram alone, which anyone familiar with my records and my dense breast tissue (which is common - about half of women have dense tissue), Honor Health should have known a 2D mammogram alone would not be sufficient to appropriately screen me for breast cancer. Then when the 2D mammogram is, of course, not sufficient alone to screen dense breast tissue, their doctor's group (who I don't even know), writes orders for a diagnostic mammogram (writing it as a "diagnostic" mammogram means it is no longer billable as preventative by my insurance, so I am required to pay for this second mammogram and the radiologist fees). Diagnostic orders can be written when the previous mammogram is inconclusive. Well of course it was inconclusive. I have dense breast tissue (which they knew since I have been seeing them for over 10 years). So. Either Honor Health does not know how to appropriately screen dense breast tissue (so why would we ever trust them with our breast care), or they know what is needed, but they brought me in for two mammograms because they can make twice as much money. Either way, Honor Health, you have lost my trust. You either don't know what you are doing or you are out to get as much money from us as you can. Well, you have taken the last dollar you will get from me (and I am disputing my bills, so I hope to get those back as well). Not only will I change where I get my mammograms, but I will drive to another hospital the next time I need urgent care. Trust means everything in healthcare. Where is your honor, Honor Health?
