  • What do you get when you combine a war veteran named "The Cambodian Rambo" and some quality ingredients? A tiny little donut shop just off the corner of DI and Mojave that goes by the name of Donut Hut. A true hidden gem in here Las Vegas! Seriously, how in the world does this place only have about 70 reviews? Part of it may be due to its location and hours. Almost directly behind a Del Taco, it's actually kind of easy to miss. And the strange hours seem to change on a regular basis, making it even worse. On our last visit, the hours were listed as open from 7:30pm to 11am, 7 days per week. However, the Yelp page actually showed they were closed altogether that day. So, if you want to be safe, maybe just call ahead. On both of our visits here, we've come later in the evening, about 9 or 10pm, and they were open, cranking out some fresh product. Well known for their blueberry cake, it is one item that we've gotten each time, and you should not leave here without trying. Regardless of time, this is an extremely good donut...but if you are lucky enough to be there when fresh ones are coming out, it is, in my opinion, one of the best donuts you can find in this city. There's a certain consistency and texture it reaches after about 20 minutes or so of coming out that is hard to beat. Not only is the inside soft and warm, but it has the exact density you look for in a cake donut and the amount of blueberry flavor is spot it. Then it's topped off with a glaze that gets just the right amount of crispness, one that can nearly be pulled off like a layer from a croissant. The whole thing isn't overly sweet, and unless I stop myself, I could easily eat a few of these things and be happily sick for rest of the night. They really are just that good! And that's not to say that the other donuts aren't good either. We've had a few different things from here, and they've all been decent. The only exception being the cruller, which is absolutely fantastic, and I'm not generally a cruller fan. Much like the cake donuts, it's got a soft interior with a slightly crispy exterior, and if you can get one fresh, it's another version that's hard to beat locally. Oddly enough, I'm not a huge fan of the other glazed varieties of their cruller or other donuts, namely the chocolate and strawberry. The flavor was just a bit off for me. Besides the spectacular donuts, visiting Donut Hut is an experience all in its own. A small shop, with only about 10 chairs, is covered with photos and memories of Sothy's past. He proudly claims that he owes his live to the USA and has gotten a ton of support from the community and local law enforcement. This guys got quite the story, and it's pretty amazing that he's even foiled some punks robbery attempts on his shop. This is certainly a must try place, and if you can get there when they're fresh, do so. Just make sure you bring some cash and an empty belly...you'll be a very happy camper walking out that door!
