  • Oh man. If the Dash Pass service is down, or has reached capacity for the day -- stay far, far away from the DMV. We arrived at 9:30am on a Saturday and the line for the Information Desk stretched out the door. Never having heard of the Dash Pass service (we are new residents to Nevada) we joined the line in the traditional way: by physically standing in it. As we waited, we heard the people around us talking about the Dash Pass and how awesome it is when it works. Essentially, you're able to "get in line" from the comfort of your home, and they send you texts as it gets closer to your turn. When you arrive, you go straight to a clerk -- and all is well! Only problem was, on this particular Saturday, the service reached capacity around 7:15am (that's 45 minutes before the DMV even opens, folks!) so standing in line the old fashioned way became the only option. We waited outside in the full sunshine/100 degree heat for 30 minutes before we made it indoors. Then, the line snaked up and down for 1.5 hours. We finally got to the Info Desk at 11:30am (two hours after we arrived - standing 100% of the time). All of this was just to get our number in the queue! Meaning, we were in a 2 hour long line, in order to get in the real line. My understanding is that with Dash Pass, you get to skip the Info Desk line altogether. Lucky ducks. But then came the real line. This was like heaven compared to the Info Desk line, because we got to sit down! Let me tell ya, my dogs were barking after being on my feet for so long. They texted me updated wait times as we sat, which was much appreciated. We had a pretzel from the Snack Bar, played on our phones, made a few important phone calls, and just hung out until -- 2 hours later -- we were finally brought to a clerk. Four hours of waiting seemed extreme to me at the time, but our clerk disagreed. She said that usually, the DMV handles triple the amount of volume on any given Saturday afternoon, which was just shocking to me. There were barely enough seats when we were there... I couldn't imagine the building being able to accommodate three times more! The clerk was calm and professional. While we accomplished a lot with her, we were not able to complete our registration due to an error in our old state's paperwork. She politely explained exactly what we needed to do to fix it. I won't lie: it was devastating when she told us that we wouldn't be able to get what we came for. Especially after waiting so long, we weren't exactly happy campers about having to come back. But she was kind and thorough, which was appreciated. Next time we will DEFINITELY be trying the Dash Pass. That line was something out of a nightmare, and I don't ever want to do it again. My advice is: if you love yourself, use the Dash Pass! And if its not working, save your DMV visit for another day. The lines just aren't worth it.
