  • I visited Korean Central Church yesterday for their annual Korean food bazaar. Though the bazaar has existed for many years, this was my first time visiting. Despite having gone to St. Nick's Greek Food Fest for several years in a row, I wasn't prepared for how crowded this event would be, probably because it's a one day event. Because I walked, I didn't have to deal with parking, but I did have to figure out how to navigate the various food stations, etc., which wasn't trivial. For those of you who are also visiting for the first time, I recommend obtaining a handout available from the volunteers that lists the various food offerings, prices, and locations. Like the food, seating is spread throughout and outside the church complex, so be prepared to take seats wherever they become available. Because I went with a group of friends, all of us ordered items to share, so we each got to try several of them. Given that I don't eat beef, my options were somewhat limited, so I ordered a KBBQ chicken skewer ($3) and a mung bean pancake ($2). The chicken had a smoky and sweet flavor, which appeared to be due to the use of a sauce or marinade--I only wish it had been a bit hotter (in temperature) when I ate it, but this was due to having to wait for my friends. The mung bean pancake, which was a savory pancake containing pork and bean sprouts, was rather subtly flavored--I wasn't a huge fan of the stringiness due to the sprouts, but I guess this is inherent to this item. I would have preferred to try the seafood pancake that was offered, but it wasn't available downstairs where we were ordering and sitting, and I didn't bother to go upstairs to look for it. In addition to these items, I also tried a rice cake and a sweet pancake. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the rice cake due to its lack of flavor and rubbery texture, as well as the spiciness of the sauce covering it. However, I did enjoy the sweet pancake, which was filled with a mixture of honey and brown sugar, and made for a nice ending to the meal. Overall, I enjoyed trying out the Korean food bazaar, even though it was rather overwhelming, esp. for a first timer. While I've had Korean food before, I'm not as knowledgeable about it as some other styles of food, so I can't pretend to be an expert. Having said that, the bazaar offers a way to sample several Korean dishes at an inexpensive price, so it's a great way to try out the cuisine if you're not super familiar with it.
