| - MIX is one of those Vegas restaurants/clubs that you should see at least once; After all, the views are impressive and vibe, ultra-lux. But as often is the case in this town, the place is more about style than substance. And there's certainly lots of style to go around here.
Located on the top floor of THEhotel (a smallish boutique hotel in the Mandalay Bay superstructure), MIX can be a little difficult to locate. I was actually staying at THEhotel the first time I ate here and had a hard time finding it. There are no signs or brochures promoting it, and it wasn't even mentioned in the in-room resort guide. This is intentional of course, and adds to the mystique and (artificial) sense of exclusivity.
To further boost its guest's sense of self-importance, MIX is serviced by a single unmarked glass elevator with the usual matrix of floor buttons, the topmost of which is marked simply "mix" (I had used the elevator a few times earlier in the day and hadn't even noticed it). Press that button and you're whisked to the top floor of the hotel (or should I say THEhotel) with dizzying views of the city en route.
As you step out of the elevator, you'll notice that the decor here is über-trendy, complete with a $1M+ glass champagne bubble chandelier that dominates the room. The style is sort of Robert Ryman meets Paris Hilton: White walls, white tablecloths, white chairs, even white china. White on white on white on white; If you're a neo-minimalist who can stare in awe for hours at a small white dot on a white canvas, this is your place.
In terms of cuisine, I couldn't really sense a theme here. Modern American, perhaps? But everything I tried was well made and artfully presented, with the ubiquitous petite portion sizes so popular in trendy Vegas eateries (I suppose that's how some of the super models in evidence here stay in their size zeros).
While the cuisine was certainly adequate, nothing really stood out for me (other than the cool stainless steel bowls in which our salads were presented). And that's an issue when you consider all the world class restaurants in this town. With such stiff competition, there's really little incentive for a return visit, other than the views perhaps (which are pretty awesome, I'll admit). But then MIX is one of those places you go to be seen and to enjoy the spectacle of it all; The food isn't really the main event.
All in all, my takeaway was a solid "meh". Like much of Vegas, MIX is certainly worth a first date but isn't really long term relationship material. However, if you're in your early 20s and want to club the night (and your trust fund) away in Paris' penthouse, MIX just might be your spot.
