Nowhere near the nicest overall hotel I've ever been in, but it was definitely nice in its own way. Everything feels like it's done with a sense of old world grande elegance, which is certainly a nice departure from many other hotels. Apparently this hotel has been around for quite sometime, so its not just faux history inside, even the Queen has a suite here. The proximity to everything around Toronto (especially being right across from Union Station) makes this place great for people visiting. It's even attached to the RBC mall below, so if it's a crappy day outside you can have a stroll around a decent amount of shops. I didn't pay for my 2 week stay here, so I can't speak to the price-quality ratio, but I did see the bills come across for services which I will go into later.
To start, the rooms feel kind of small, considering the scale of the hotel itself and everything else in it. Some of the rooms have upgraded televisions, but most don't. The shower feels old and a bit wobbly in the bottom, and the layout of the bathroom is a bit cramped. I will say they make up for the tiny room by having a super comfortable bed, with ultra plush pillows. I slept wonderfully every night. The service here is also very nice, as I usually left notes each morning requesting certain things which were always responded to promptly.
The catering staff here does a pretty masterful job putting on large meals with a lot of different options, although I did really start to get sick of chicken in multiple forms. The breakfast is the one area they failed to deliver repeatedly, but lunch and dinner were usually pretty decent. I never did order room service, but there are also a variety of restaurants downstairs to choose from if you feel like staying in the hotel for the night. There is also a bar which several people visited frequently and seemed to sing the praises of each time.
I would recommend that before coming here you sign up for their President's Club. It cost nothing to join and it gives you free internet access in your room, which would normally cost you $14 per day. It also gets rid of the phone service charges, normally a $1.50 hit every time you pick it up. The laundry service here is by far the most expensive I have ever seen, and my bill for 2 weeks worth of clothes was near $500. Just to give you an idea of some of the charges, socks and boxers are $5 each, jeans and dress shirts are $15, and a suit is $25, and they also add on tax for each item as well.
It's a great place to stay on someone else's dime, because they will treat you like first class the entire time you're here, but I'm not so sure I would ever come back and stay if I was paying. I'm sure there have to be other places a little more updated in the city where the amount you spend stretches much further.
