| - I came to Hollywood Theater to see a movie last night with a few girlfriends. I never knew this theater existed before, and was pleasantly surprised!
I absolutely love one room movie theaters. They transport you back to simpler days, before theater tickets were ten dollars each and concessions robbed you blind. Hollywood Theater maintains much of its old-school charm. The cinema room itself is very spacious. Many movie theaters have their floors slanted downward so that you are sitting a little higher up than the people in front of you. Hollywood Theater is actually the opposite; the floor slants upward as you walk toward the screen, so when you sit down and recline, you basically feel like you're about to blast off in a rocket ship. It took me a few minutes to get used to this, but the concept seems to make sense when it comes to having an unobstructed view of the screen. The seats are incredibly comfy and large, and there's plenty of leg space which is a plus. We each got a free small bag of popcorn for checking in on Yelp - awesome!
It's hard for me to come to Hollywood Theater without comparing it to Row House Cinema, which is my favorite one room theater in Pittsburgh. I noticed that Hollywood Theater seems to be a little less clean than Row House. Additionally, we heard a strange creaking noise throughout much of our movie, presumably from the heating/air conditioning unit, that was distracting at times. I still absolutely loved my experience at Hollywood Theater, but I don't think it impressed me quite as much as Row House.
That being said, Hollywood Theater is a lovely old cinema with plenty of charm. If you're looking for an enjoyable evening at a classic theater that won't break the bank, Hollywood Theater is definitely a must-try!
