  • So, how do you review a place that is something different to every person? Here goes. I have been to the IMC twice, for totally different reasons. There are thousands of reasons that you might go to the IMC, so my experiences may or may not be helpful. The space inside redefines eclectic, and trips to the bathroom are an opportunity to broaden your horizons in a clean, wtf kinda way. On my first trip to the IMC, I consulted and shared my expertise with a group, Community Courtwatch of Champaign County. Nice folks with a genuine desire to make CU a better place, but I ultimately decided that we were not perfect fits and that was that. There are many groups like this (and most are prolly pretty left-leaning) that share this space for their events and meetings. It is an absolutely fine place to have such meetings, with comfy couches, water, a coffee maker, parking, and everything else you might need, including access to bus transportation. My second visit was just last weekend when I went to see a band. Its not a great venue for music. It may have been an inexperienced (though gray-haired) sound engineer, it may have been crappy equipment, or perhaps it was the cavernous nature of the place, but the sound quality was terrible. Everybody was very friendly and nice in that progressive Urbana way, and a very diverse crowd showed up to hear the music. They had soda, popcorn and bottled water for sale, too. Also, and this is a big plus, the concert was BYOB for alcohol. People were literally walking around the hall with their own 40s. Some may see this as less than classy, and it is, but I see it as extremely liberating. I don't need to expand on the possibilities of all this, but being able to BYOB to a concert that is in Downtown Urbana is almost as awesome as having a wookie to drive the souped up ride you won in a card game from Billy Dee Williams.
