  • I completely understand that some folks - generally those from Florida - are fans of Publix. And that's okay. I like Publix. They are certainly a step above, say, the majority of Food Lion locations (there are some Food Lion stores that used to be Bloom that are actually quite decent). And the staff at Publix - at least this location, which is currently tremendously overstaffed because of their grand opening - is crazy friendly. But when it comes to their goods, it's a grocery store. There are items, such as chicken breasts, which you can get across the street at the deli counter at Harris Teeter, for cheaper on a regular basis (they are currently on sale for the same price at Publix). And they are doing comparisons with items so you can decide which you like better, which is good, so you can make the choice yourself. There are also items, like their OJ, which you won't find elsewhere - and it's pretty tasty, if you like fresh OJ (note: I don't know if it actually IS fresh, but it tastes fresh). They also have things like event planning services and, at least at the moment, food tastings. But are those items worth a side trip? Maybe, maybe not. Is it worth it to not require a loyalty card for discounts? Probably not a big deal, because most of us already have a pocket full of them. And if you really care about such things, go up the street to Aldi, which is better than both Harris Teeter and Publix.
