| - I noticed that when you first look at the reviews here you are inundated with positive. I'm writing this because I think that this restaurant is the most overrated place I have ever experienced, and this is mostly due to rave reviews that I read here. I understand that everyone has different tastes, however I disliked certain things here enough that I felt it was only fair that another view point was offered, and I wish that someone had talked me out of trying it.
Our service was fine (not exceptional, but fine - and honestly it seems that good help is hard to come by these days because I always thought that if you work in the service industry you go out of your way to be pleasant and accommodating, however this seems to be an outdated concept now almost everywhere). We arrived before the dinner rush so I have no complaints about a long wait and was surprised how quickly we were seated. I found the restaurant to be beautiful with a nice atmosphere.
I really, really hated the food. So did my boyfriend. This was our first time so we did try a variety of things. Someone did previously mention on here that the lasagna tasted like chef boyardee, BUT to be entirely spot on I have to add that it is chef boyardee with nutmeg. The only reason I could imagine someone liking this is if somehow subconsciously they are comforted and happy because it tastes like childhood. It is not, however, something I would expect to be served in a restaurant. The boyfriend echoes these thoughts, though he was also displeased with the texture.
I was super excited to try the mortadella and pistachio pizza! Now I did not realize that this is not a red sauce-based dish, and so if it does specify that on the menu then that expectation not being met is entirely on me, however I envisioned a regular pizza with bits of meat and pistachio on it. This was a very oily, pistachio-mixed-with-pesto-based pizza with a few chunks of mortadella. It was sweet. (I do not like sweet pizza.) I do happen to like pesto, and occasionally use it as a pasta sauce, however this was so drenched in the stuff that I did not finish a single slice. Boyfriend also ate only one slice, and neither of us could have been bribed into eating more, though I doubt anyone in the history of eating pizza has ever said that after just one piece.
We did order soup, which was decent. We also had the antipasto appetizer, which consists of cured meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables, and toasted bread. This was mostly decent, however I found the meats to be oily and one of the cheese selections was sliced provolone. I was expecting something a bit....more. Personally I think cheese plates should include either very delicious, rare, or unique cheeses, but this had none of those.
2 stars are given for the restaurant itself, being byob, and because there was nothing *wrong* with the service. .5 stars for the food. My overall perception is that people are giving more stars because they think they are *supposed* to like it. If offered the same food in a different environment I would wager we would not see the same reviews. I would not recommend this restaurant.
