| - Wow, reading the reviews below, guess I am not alone. It takes a lot for me to shred a place or say "NEVER again"....not one hesitation on this one. I am the other half of the business meeting/review below by Christine. I had gotten a Livingsocial Deal for $30 (paid $15), and thought this would be a cool restaurant to try close to work. Since it was going to expire in August, chose to use it for a place to grab a bite to eat, and have a mini meeting with my business partner.
We both thought the place was really cute once inside. We were seated, given menus and water. We were the only people in the entire restaurant. It was taking a while for our order to be taken, and we were starved due not having lunch from a busy schedule and waiting to go here (it was 3:30pm). I finally went back, saw another employee, and asked him if we could order now. He went back and got our waitress. As she approached our table it was apparent she was annoyed, when she got to our table, she made no attempt to hide this fact. It was the most hostile, uncomfortable encounter I have EVER had with a server. And why? Because we were hungry, and asked if we could order? At this point we felt quite awkward being in this restaurant.
The waitress was slightly more friendly upon returning with our food, offering us a larger table to accomodate the appetizers, and allow us to write if we wanted to for our meeting. So we sat down to eat. The hummus was ok, the baba ghannouj was unedible. I tried it, then asked my business partner to try it also, because it didn't taste right. She immediately grimaced, agreed, and we asked to have something else. The manager told us it was an "acquired taste". Ok, maybe, but what do you say to the fact I love Baba Ghannouj and have had it on several occasions at different restaurants, and not once had a problem. He told us he would replace it with more Hummus. Also in the conversation was more questioning of exactly what we thought was wrong with the Baba Ghannouj ("describe it"), that the chef uses recipes that are 600 years old, and how he thinks their hummus is the best in Phoenix. Sooo, the second/replacement plate of hummus was a different color than the first, and tasted horrible/different than the first PLUS it had a hair on top of it. To be honest the experience at this point was so bad, we didn't even bother to complain any further, just wanted to leave.
The other things we had ordered were ham, cheese, honey mustard and ciabatta bread, and Cannellini bean Bruschetta, edible, all of it edible but not memorable.
Like I said, never, never again.
If you are craving or wanting to try some hummus or baba ghannouj, try Pita Jungle. Bruschetta - Postino's or The Living Room. They may be a chains, but at least the quality, consistency and taste are great!
