  • Thanks Kris, Ricky and the Azyun team for organizing this event. It's my first one and it was a pretty enjoyable experience. It was nice to gather for some good food and meet some new people. Hopefully I'll be able to make it out to some more in the future. Now, onto the review. First off, really liked the beer pairings for tonight's menu. That was a surprise and Victoria from Muskoka Brewery did a great job in finding just the right brew for each of the tasty plates. New G&T product? Yes please! I liked the fact that most plates had some spice to it. Right up my alley. Here's the breakdown: Seared Tuna Rice Toast - Decent start, flavours melded together nicely but I may have detected a hint of burntness. Pork Jowl Skewers - One of the best dishes of the night. When Ricky introduced it I knew it would be an instant fave. Great balance of meat and fat, wonderful flavour. Prawn Toast - On first bite I thought it was just toast but as I worked into the center, the prawn showed up and it provided such a nice bounce. The fish sauce is a unique and nice touch. Fried Chicken Mantou Sandwich - The other winner of the night. The mantou was wonderfully soft and the kimchi added some awesome flavour and heat to the fried chicken. I do have one comment about this one though even though it was great. The chicken was soaked in brine for 48 hrs but the flavour was easily overpowered by the kimchi. I'm not sure if the chef means to make kimchi the focal point of the dish but if not, maybe using something less strong to accompany the chicken to let the brined chicken shine through would work better. Truffle Fried Rice - Loved the mushrooms in this one. Great flavour, quail egg makes a nice addition to the rice. Overall I have to say the plates had some fresh and unique flavour combos, which I totally admire. I will definitely be returning to taste some of the other things on the menu and to have some more of my faves.
