  • I will start by saying, I have been an on and off customer of Set Me Free for about 12 years. I bought my Gary Fisher bike from them (the college street location) in 2003 and I still ride it. I hadn't done much for with it in the way of service over the years, because I wasn't riding it much. Then last spring I moved back to the Roncesvalles neighborhood and started riding more. I decided to take my beloved bike in for a tune up, because oh she needed it. When I walked into the store, I was greeted by the lovely lady who I think is the owner. Staff here are always pleasant, I will say that. Was told I would need to leave the bike for a few days. Not a problem. The problem was in the returned product. My freshly tuned up bike had grease all over it, and the fenders weren't put back on properly. Not only that, but the brakes were rubbing against the tires! Don't they test the bikes before returning them to customers? And what about wiping off the grease and dirt that was not on it when I brought it in!? A return trip to the store (against my better judgment) had me needing new tires, which took forever (over a week) because they had to be ordered in. And again, when I received my bike back it was covered in grease and there weren't even any caps on the tires! So another winter passed, and I guess you're thinking I took my bike to the other bike shop down the street. No! Apparently I am a completely masochistic tool, because I decided to give Set Me Free ANOTHER shot. This time, it was new, more comfortable handlebars and a more comfy seat I was after. And again, the lovely staff in front was helpful and pleasant. Left the bike for the week, and since I was unable to pick it up on my own, I had my husband get it for me. When he returned home with it, the first thing I noticed was that they did not put my new seat on. And the trademark grease was all over the handlebar grips, having caused hubs' hands to be completely black. Yuck. Again, the fenders were wonky and looked like they were slapped on. I called the store and the lady said to bring it back, that they would take care of it, so I had hubby go back (poor guy). The "fix" involved some sort of industrial cleanser that didn't work very well because the gear shifters are still greasy and my hands went black just riding it in the back alley for a few minutes. The fenders were fixed and the seat changed. But to my chagrin, I noticed upon close inspection of my beautiful new handlebars, a significant scratch, obviously caused by improper care being taken with tools... Metal tools can easily scratch painted metal. And looking even more closely I noticed all my painted nuts and bolts devoid of paint, and more hack scratches on other painted spots, particularly where the brakes and shifters have paint. I am in disbelief at the absolute lack of care on the part of the mechanics at Set Me Free, and I think I am going to allow this place to live up to its name and officially Set ME Free.
