I tried their "red velvet" cupcake. This, as others have already noted, was the blandest red velvet cupcake I have ever tasted. When you order red velvet, you expect a certain taste profile. The cake part of the cupcake was a dingy looking brown rather than richly red. And it tasted somewhere between a really weak cocoa and a really muddled vanilla. The texture of the cake was pretty decent - moist with a nice crumb - but that did not make up for the bland flavour.
The frosting, too, was very bland and nothing like red velvet frosting. This was not a rich and luxurious cream cheese frosting that you expect with a red velvet. To be honest, I've had other red velvet cupcakes (or cakes, for that matter) which didn't have cream cheese frosting, but they still tasted like red velvet because of the strong red velvet flavour of the cake. This was not the case. The frosting appeared to be a really bland and grainy buttercream. If I had blind-tasted this, I would not have guessed red velvet. I don't know what I would have guessed since the flavours were so muted and muddled.
If I'm going to spend as much on a cupcake (in terms of money and calories) as I would on a burger, I need to be blown away. I was not blown away. These are not worth the hefty price tag or the calorie expenditure. I would rather have a burger.
