| - Went here today for the Bank of America Museums on Us program, which offers free museum admission to BOA debit or credit card holders on the first weekend of every month. As a bonus, I went with a friend and the Harvey B. Gantt museum staff allowed my friend in free too. I think the gal said it is because they are a smaller museum.. It's a nice gesture. The gal at check-in was super sweet and told us what exhibits were on each floor and about upcoming events. Thank you for that information!
Today, we saw the 1960Now exhibit which was modern era photos of recent political and anti-police brutality marches and protests.. Freddie Gray (Baltimore), Ferguson (Mike Brown), Black Lives Matter, etc. It was pretty neat to see activism and artistry developed from photos.. A live living history of present day.
We saw "Art of a New Deal/WPA," which sadly I'm still uneducated on what WPA stands for. My assumption is that it was mostly Black artists in New York City. I remember reading that Romare Bearden was excluded from the program because he had a full-time job.
Last but not least, the best exhibit IMO, the Dance Theatre of Harlem! They showed posters, photographs of practice and shows, playbills from around the world (China, England, Italy, Austria, Spain, Jamaica, Russia, etc.), costumes, letters from dancers, information about and artifacts from the founder (Arthur Mitchell), and films of various stage plays. It was very interesting.
The only thing that I wasn't so fond of.. Most of the gallery/exhibits are not allowed to be photographed. I wanted to take photos for someone who couldn't visit the exhibit, due to being incarcerated so that he could see that there are viable alternatives and positive, encouraging, historical stories that would motivate and educate him. That would be the only thing that I would change.. Policy.
The gallery is small and will take about 1 - 1.5 hours, if you're like me and like to read and look at everything.. Soak in everything and take your leisurely time!
The exterior view of the building is really something else, the architecture is pretty neat. The galleries begin on the second story and expand to the third floor. The second story also has some classroom space for interactive events, plays, educational learning and family experiences, music galas, etc. Important note: do not attempt to ride the large elevator up from 2 to 3. We almost got stuck. The security guard kindly rescued us before we both had panic attacks. LOL there is a regular passenger elevator towards the info desk, otherwise use the stairs. Restrooms were clean.
I will most likely return in the future.
