| - I'm a fan of the show, so I'm glad I came, saw, and conquered. No, I didn't get to see the Old Man, but...
First off, the location of the store is away from the buzz of the normal Strip for normal people. There's plenty of parking around the building, which you may have gathered from the show... Or you can just cab it over. The neighborhood is pretty cool and seems less artificial than other parts of Vegas (aka some parts of it may be considered run down... but in a cool way!), but there are still many remnants of old and present Vegas (how many shotgun chapels does one neighborhood need?!)
It's also interesting to see how this little Pawn Shop has revitalized the entire block it inhabits. I was genuinely attracted to coming to an area (and spending money) in which I would have otherwise not had any interest!
Second, it's also interesting to see the differences between the show's portrayal of the store and the actual reality. These might be no brainers, but for instance:
THE SHOW
The store has a reasonable amount of people in it at any given time
REALITY
Maybe it was the time in which I went (5:00 on a Wednesday night), but the store is a clusterf*** of people, far from the reasonable amount shown on TV
THE SHOW
The store is large, its depths unknowable
REALITY
The shop is actually pretty narrow with a curated and organized amount of inventory on the floor (and a small gift shop in the back). I was expecting the space to be more Hardcore Pawn-esque with crap just overflowing into multiple rooms and counters, but the whole store is actually just an L-shaped space where things are neatly displayed with very little square footage between counters.
THE SHOW
The store = sanitized... Martha Stewartesque... ok maybe not...
REALITY
The store = gritty
THE SHOW
One of the 4 dudes will be at the store on the floor at any given moment
REALITY
Nope. I'm not a stalker, so I have no idea how often the original 4 guys are there... But something tells me they spend a lot of time in the area marked "no cameras"... and can likewise afford to take the time off.
All in all, if you're a fan of the show, it's cool to see some of the pieces of history featured on the show in person. There's a section for vintage coins, original artwork (Pablo Picasso!), and even pirate guns! Fan or not, definitely worth a gander. Everything is for sale! Nothing is affordable! Buy! Buy! BUY!!!
