| - Impressive building design by Gehry. This art museum occupies a whole city block and has 5 floors. It took me over 3 hours to explore the entire space at a somewhat choosy pace. Admission was approximately $20 per adult. At the time I visited in April 2012, some parts of the museum were under renovation in preparation for a Pablo Picasso exhibit and others. This made it slightly difficult and confusing to cover some of the floors. Staff was often nearby. The large museum store has some nice selections for gifting.
The museum has a vast permanent collection of European and North American art, a modern/contemporary collection including some by my favorite, Marc Chagall, and prints and drawings from several eras including French and English caricatures, which I particularly enjoyed. Another significant section, reminiscent of The Cloisters of New York City, hosts an extensive collections of Christian religious items- crucifixes, chalices (maybe the Holy Grail), tapestries, carvings, and jewelry. Along with non-permanent exhibitions, this museum satisfies and overwhelms.
