  • My daughter was in a beginner's class for 8-11 year olds for about a year at this school, and my primary feeling about the entire experience is disappointment. We went through a few coaches trying to find the right fit for our daughter. The first coach wasn't hands-on at all, and made no attempts that I could see to help my daughter improve her skills or offer suggestions. (I'll never know for sure, because parental interaction with the coaches is discouraged, unless you have a kid that competes). The second coach was more hands-on, but offered no challenges or encouragement and just kind of took the kids through the drills. The third coach was interested in achieving results but was too harsh in the way she spoke. The fourth coach was great but moved after one session. The next coach was much like the first. It seems that unless you start your kid really young, have a prodigy to offer, want to have a kid that competes or can afford to pay for private coaching or several hours a week, you can't really expect your kid to learn anything. After a year my kid's skills hadn't advanced appreciably at all. I don't really know what happened because, although we as parents paid the bill, we got no feedback from the coaches or staff as to how our kid was doing, how we could help her do better or anything else. There were only two forms of communication - signs at the entrance to re-enroll, bring our kid to parents' night out, or sign up for some kind of camp; or typed notes relayed through the kids to remind us of what was on the signs. Professional? I suppose so, in that policies, procedures and schedules are followed to the letter. Effective training? Not in our experience. We wanted gymnastics skills but got what - Gymboree? Tumbler Babysitting? Worthwhile? Absolutely not, unless you have a star or lots of money to offer them. In addition to the impersonal atmosphere, the school seems unapologetically concerned with little more than its bottom line. No discount for added classes, no sibling discount, no refunds - ever - no matter what the circumstances. And the staff actually told me that this no-refunds policy is "in the name of good customer service, so that everyone is treated equally." The question that follows in my mind is - treated equally like what? If you don't necessarily have or care to produce a star and want to feel good about spending money on your kid's activity, look elsewhere. All I feel is a little bit dirty.
